I remember a clairvoyant saying publicly before the year 2000 that NYC would be struck by a devastating catastrophe....I could not imagine what it might be.
Then 9/11 happend

i am currently writing a research paper on why people become jws.
i would greatly appreciate it if many of you fine people could tell me the reason(s) why you joined the jws.
those of you born to jw parents, please chime in also.
my parents converted when I was a year old in 1957. I suspect they converted because they were not happy with the Catholic Church; and I also suspect it gave them something RIGID to cling to in what may have been, at the time they converted, a very shaky marriage.
They were married for 60 years
i know i just made one post, but i have another.. after the conversation with my bf tonight, i finally gave in and said i would sit down with a jw.
i don't beleive the bs for one moment.
i don't see the point in doing this, but if it will make my bf happy i'm willing to do it.
dont waste your time...
they will have an answer for every intelligent rational point or objection you raise. They are rigourously trained to overcome objections.
In their minds; they will ALWAYS be right and YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WRONG; and they will let you know that.
You will not get any satisfactory results.
been there; done that--on both sides of this fence, Frank
up until this evening i had thought teresa schiavo was in an unconcious state, lying on a bed with just a machine keeping her alive.
how wrong was i?
i saw her smiling and showing awareness of her surroundings.
this is a very long thread and I have not read all the posts;
I do not pretend to understand every aspect of the legalities that are prevailing in this case;
however, I clearly DO NOT understand how a court of law can override a Jehovahs Witness parent to transfuse blood into their child, claiming that a blood transfusion is saving the childs life --AGAINST THE WISHES OF THE PARENTS-----------
and a court of law cannot override this spouses ( Michael Shiavo) decision to request a lack of hydration and nutrients ( withdrawal of feeding tube) which will kill his life partner. So much for the vows...."for better or for worse"...
....and the president is saying "to err on the side of life"?-----------this is like a Greek chorus
today is easter sunday and i attended a family mass with my wife and kids at the local catholic church which we are members of.
it was "standing room only".
the entire service was not more than 30 minutes.. routine for us; except for today i actually listened to what the priest had to say.
"...express our spirituality in some communal way.."
willyloman, I thinked you summed it up for all of us
a recent poll suggests that over 90% of americans believe in god.
this compares to around 48% of brits who believe in god's existence.. even the devoutly religious tony blair doesn't want britain to follow in the religious footsteps of the usa, as he clearly states here as he risks incurring the displeasure of george w: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4369481.stm.
so, as a person whose criticism of the us is confined mainly to it's penal system, i was wondering this: do you think that the more religious a country becomes, the harsher it's treatment is of those who err, harsh punishment being seen as a christian virtue?.
IN the American culture, there is clearly a separation of Church and State. The different "checks and balances" in this countries government keep it that way. There is also such a "mix" of differing religiouns here that the government has to be a separate "secular" entity.
Middle America , and the deep south are both very provincial regions, most of your moral majority is from these areas.
Both coasts of America, especially the North East and promarily New York City, tends to be more secular. I am myself , along with "waves" of other Americans are concerned by the outspoken moral majority. They are literally like a subculture which is beginning to grow in financial and political influence.
The American President is allowed to be any religion he chooses ( why not?) However, IF (and thats a big IF) the religious moral majority ever take control of this country, There would be such a voter "backlash". I guess that would be a great excuse for me to move back to Europe.
It would be like having the Jehovahs Witnesses in Political Power. ( Good Grief; is that how it happened in Germany 75 years ago?)
They are just as scary to us as they are to you.
i am sure there is a thread out there somewhere about everyones fav movie........there are so many good ones.. today for the first time i saw the birds by alfred hitchcock.
yikes!!!.
and now the quiet man is on with john wayne.
does anyone remember BODY HEAT with a very young John Hurt and introducing Kathleen Turner? sizzle....
how about OBSESSION with Cliff Roberston and Genevieve Bujold?
I suppose I am dating myself with these two flicks, but they hold their appeal, all these years later
*this is a bit of a riff off of bluegrass tom's post in the bible research forumn .
in my old hall we had three interracial couples.
in fact i didn't even realise that they were interracial until i was about 12. .
No , there was no prejudice in my congregation growing up. There were some interracial couples.
There were, however, some very segregated residential neighborhoods and I remember the interracial couples getting some odd comments from the householders.
In New York city there would not be any prejudice against an interracial couple. In fact, the City is so diverse I think it would be an ideal place for acceptence. However, some of the suburbs around the city, especially some of the more upper middle class suburbs, are still very provincial in their thinking. Old predudices die hard..
.
the easter bunny has been hopping around the board with his basket....how many can you find?.
....WOW, I found the egg with the $1000 bill in it!
WOA, drinks all around are on me this morning.....
i took a ride this morning, and it must be easter sunday's fault.
most people are driving so slowly.
they come out of church, and drive well below the allowed speed limit.
pass them
